Taunton and Wellington Labour Party have welcomed the measures announced in today’s Budget, saying it shows that working families and the cost of living remain the government’s top priority.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves set out a Budget which the government says will cut the cost of living, reduce NHS waiting lists, and continue to bring down borrowing and debt.

Tessa Dean, chair of Taunton and Wellington Labour Party, said the plans will be felt locally. Commenting on the NHS, she said,

“The NHS is still reeling from years of Tory austerity which began under the coalition with the Liberal Democrats. Last year, people voted to have an NHS they could rely on when they needed it. That’s why the Chancellor has committed to protecting NHS investment, which is already delivering cuts to waiting lists and millions of extra appointments.”

Ms Dean also highlighted action on the cost of living. “The cost of living remains the number one priority for families across Taunton and Wellington. People are feeling the squeeze on their pay packets as bills keep rising. I am pleased that the Chancellor has committed to raising the minimum wage for millions of working people.”

She added that removing levies from energy bills will save the average household £150 a year, while three-quarters of pensioners will receive Winter Fuel Payments this winter.

Ms Dean also welcomed investment in local services, including an extra £18 million for upgrading playgrounds and additional road funding to tackle potholes.

She concluded that, “This Budget will make a difference right on our doorstep.”
